Pretty much between the Shure sm57 (for vocals), the sm57 beta for things like instruments and the sm58 for a reliable workhorse. That's the layman's (my) interpretation of it =]

Pretty much what I would have said, except I prefer sm58's for vocals too. most of the HBM stuff in THIS thread were done with them. A couple of betas were used also.

It depends what your looking at.

For live stuff the SM58s are damn good.

For studio, my favorite budget condenser is the audio technica MB4000C, great sounding and very versatile mic.
